Korbinian Kopf is a partner of the firm, which has offices in Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Zürich, and New York. Based in Munich, he is also responsible for the firm's New York offshoot, Maiwald, Inc., which provides European IP services to U.S. clients and acts as an interface to U.S. clients and associates. Mr. Kopf received a master's degree in electrical engineering; completed a master's thesis in the field of digital image processing in medical engineering; and received a master's degree in business administration with a master's thesis on Chinese negotiation culture. Before entering the field of IP law in 1996, he worked as a business consultant with a major American phototechnology company and a German chemical company in Hong Kong and southern China. During 2000 and 2001, Mr. Kopf was an associate with Kenyon and Kenyon in New York and passed the registration examination for patent attorneys and agents at the USPTO. As head of the engineering department of Maiwald Patentanwalts, his main practice areas are German and European patent prosecution and litigation in the field of telecommunications, software, image processing, business methods, and aeronautical engineering. Due to his knowledge of both European and U.S. law, Mr. Kopf is experienced in handling cases of U.S. clients in Europe and is qualified to point out the differences between the legal systems. Fluent in German, English, and French, he is counsel to a number of large international corporations with regard to their international filing strategies. Mr. Kopf is a member of several professional organizations including FICPI, VPP, AIPPI, and AIPLA, where he is a regular lecturer at seminars, meetings, and conferences.
