Robert J. Buchanan is president of the State Bar of Michigan. A trial lawyer who concentrates his practice on plaintiff medical malpractice and vehicle crash cases, he is cofounder and managing member of Buchanan Firm. Mr. Buchanan has served in various roles with the Grand Rapids Bar Association, Michigan Association for Justice, Michigan State Bar Foundation, Federal Bar Association, and International Society of Primerus Law Firms. He has been involved in State Bar work for more than two decades and headed many of its committees and work groups. He has been on the SBM Board of Commissioners since 2010 and served as its treasurer, secretary, vice president, and president-elect. As president, Mr. Buchanan prioritizes cutting-edge technology, diversity and inclusion, access to justice, and promoting resources and services. He has been recognized by “The Best Lawyers in America” and Super Lawyers and is rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Buchanan graduated from Kalamazoo College and Wayne State University Law School.
