Hon. Muriel D. Hughes has served on the Wayne County Circuit Court bench since 2006. Judge Hughes has served in the Family Division, Civil Division, and as a Business Court Judge. Previously, she had a successful law practice for 23 years which specialized real estate, business, probate and in general litigation. Judge Hughes served as a facilitator/mediator for the Wayne County Circuit Court. Prior to becoming a Judge, she was appointed as Wayne County Public Administrator by the State Attorney General. In addition to Judge Hughes’ law license, she held real estate sales and a real estate broker’s license. She has long been involved in many professional and community organizations. Judge Hughes is currently a board member for the Society of Irish American Lawyers. She has served as a group leader in the Inns of Court program, which mentors young attorneys, with the Detroit Bar Association. Judge Hughes is a past president of the Wayne County Probate Bar Association. She was elected by her peers to the Board for the Michigan Judges Association and served on the Civil/Business Law Committee. In 2010-2012, she served on Michigan’s Solutions on Self-Help Task Force to expand coordinated assistance for self-represented individuals. Judge Hughes has appeared as speaker for Michigan Judges Institute, and the Detroit Bar Association. She was a recipient of the Volunteer Extraordinaire Award from the Junior League of Detroit and she received the Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council.
