Ronald J. Bretz

A professor emeritus at Cooley Law School, Ronald J. Bretz was chair of the Criminal Law and Procedure Department, from 2001 to 2012. He taught criminal law, criminal procedure, and forensic evidence and was a six-time winner of the Stanley E. Beatty Teaching Award. Prof. Bretz formerly practiced criminal law with the State Appellate Defender Office. In 1987, the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) presented him with an award for Outstanding Contribution to Criminal Defense Appellate Work. He is a member of the Criminal Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, CDAM, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Michigan Criminal Justice Policy Commission. Prof. Bretz has lectured for the Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System, CDAM, the Wayne County Criminal Advocacy Program, the State Bar of Michigan, the Ingham County Bar Association, and the Michigan State Police Forensic Serology Unit and is a regular lecturer for the Michigan Judges Association. He is co-author of a criminal law textbook, "Criminal Law, Cases, Statutes, and Problems" (Wolters Kluwer, 2015). He is also the author of a chapter on the Michigan criminal justice system in "The History of Michigan Law" (Ohio University Press, 2006) and has published articles in the "Wayne Law Review," the "Cooley Law Review," and the "Cooley Journal of Practical and Clinical Law."
