Michael J. Ferency (deceased)

An assistant Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney since 1985, Michael J. Ferency's assignments have included both district and circuit court dockets. Special assignments have included vertical prosecutions of arson, criminal sexual conduct involving child victims, embezzlement, homicide, identity theft, and violations of the Controlled Substances Act. From 1998 to 2006, Mr. Ferency was unit chief of the Major Crimes Unit, an assignment that included the supervision of attorneys assigned to the regional drug enforcement team. The assignment also included participation in various task forces investigating and prosecuting homicides, street gangs, criminal conspiracies, and "cold cases." Mr. Ferency currently serves as unit chief of the Circuit Courts Division and is designated as chief trial lawyer. He has been an adjunct professor of law at Cooley Law School, teaching Trial Practice, Advanced Trial Practice, and Michigan Criminal Practice; an adjunct professor of law at Michigan State University's School of Criminal Justice, teaching undergraduate and graduate level Criminal Procedure, Crimes, Evidence, and graduate level Law and Forensic Science; and, commencing September 2007, an adjunct professor of law at Michigan State University College of Law, teaching at the Trial Practice Institute. Mr. Ferency has been a faculty member for ICLE and for schools sponsored by the Michigan State Police, where he has lectured on arson, asset forfeiture, homicide investigation, identity theft, and prosecution of drug cases.
