Laura Buus is an appeals officer (AO), international specialist. After an internship at Daimler-Benz AG in Germany, her first job was as a paraprofessional in international tax at then PriceWaterhouse in New York City. After taking the classes required to sit for the CPA exam, Ms. Buus moved to Arthur Andersen as a tax professional, working in New York City and then in Zurich, Switzerland, as the only German-speaking CPA in the U.S. tax group. She later returned to her native Detroit and joined a local bank. Realizing she missed tax too much, Ms. Buus went to Wayne State University (WSU) to earn her master of science in taxation and ultimately found her way to the IRS in 2005. Ms. Buus started in the Small Business/Self-Employed Division, followed by a stint in the Large Business and International Division as an international examiner, and then on to Appeals as a domestic AO in Detroit. When Appeals created teams to work on international issues exclusively, she was selected as an international specialist. In addition to working at the IRS, Ms. Buus has been an adjunct faculty member at WSU, where she has been able to share her passion for tax with the next generation.
