Major Matthew A. Krause is an officer in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, practicing military law. He began military service in 1997 and was commissioned in the Judge Advocate General's Corps in 2001. Major Krause is currently the Regimental Judge Advocate of the 2d Cavalry Regiment at Kandahar Airfield Afghanistan, where he advises the command and staff on military law, international law, targeting, and human rights. Before active duty, Major Krause was in private practice in Charlotte, North Carolina, practicing criminal defense and business litigation. Major Krause's former assignments include the Command Judge Advocate of the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), Michigan, Brigade Trial Counsel (prosecutor) 113th Field Artillery Brigade, North Carolina, Chief of Legal Assistance at the U.S. Army V Corps, Heidelberg, Germany, Defense Counsel at Fort Drum, New York, Bagram, Afghanistan, and Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, Senior Defense Counsel at Fort Eustis, Virginia, Brigade Judge Advocate of the 7th Sustainment Brigade at Fort Eustis, Virginia, and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and the Officer-in-Charge of the Rose Barracks Law Center in Vilseck, Germany. In his capacity as a military attorney, he and his staff have assisted thousands of service members and families with the legal aspects of military service. His awards include the Army Parachutist Badge, three Meritorious Service Medals, the Joint Services Commendation Medal, six Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. Major Krause holds a Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University and an LL.M. in Military Law from the Judge Advocate General's School. Major Krause is a member of the State Bars of North Carolina and Michigan, and a member of the bars of the Court of Appeals of the Armed Forces and the Supreme Court of the United States. He and his family live in Bavaria.
