Alison E. Hirschel

Alison E. Hirschel is the director and managing attorney of the Michigan Elder Justice Initiative (MEJI), a legal services advocacy program. In addition to MEJI's legal work, it houses the Michigan Long Term Care Ombudsman Program; the MI Health Link Ombudsman Program; and the MI Choice, Community Transition Services, and PACE Ombudsman Program. Ms. Hirschel also serves as the elder law specialist at the Michigan Poverty Law Program and is a consulting attorney to the Crime Victims Legal Assistance Project--Elder Justice. From 1998 to 2020, she taught elder law at the University of Michigan Law School, where she served as a public interest/public service fellow. Ms. Hirschel speaks and writes frequently about issues affecting vulnerable older adults and people with disabilities. She previously worked at Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service, Community Legal Services in Philadelphia, as a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and as a law clerk to a federal district judge in Philadelphia. In 2003, Ms. Hirschel received the National Aging and Law Award.
