Hon. Brian W. MacKenzie served as a judge of the 52d District Court from 1988 through 2014. Among the numerous awards he has received for his community-based programs is the Paul H. Chapman medal, awarded by the Foundation for the Improvement of Justice, for significant contributions to the American criminal justice system. Judge MacKenzie currently serves as secretary of the American Judges Association and chairs its Education Committee. He is the president of the Michigan Association of Drug Court Professionals and is a member of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. He has also served on the DWI Court Task Force of the National Center for DWI Courts. From 2008 to 2010, Judge MacKenzie was the American Bar Association/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Judicial Fellow. After law school, he joined the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office as an assistant prosecuting attorney, and then joined the Michigan Attorney General's Office in 1979 as an assistant attorney general, where he remained until he was appointed to the 52nd District Court in 1988. Judge MacKenzie has written and lectured throughout the country on such issues as substance abuse, domestic violence, drug treatment courts, and court media relations.
