Tonya Schuitmaker

First elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2004 and then again in 2006, Representative Tonya Schuitmaker has made issues such as child protection, job growth and retention, judiciary, agriculture, and tourism some of her top legislative priorities. In addition to her role as assistant minority floor leader, she serves as minority vice chairperson of the Judiciary Committee and as a member of the Education Committee. In her first term, Rep. Schuitmaker was appointed to serve as vice chairperson of the Judiciary Committee and served on the House of Representatives' Commerce; Energy and Technology; and Local Government and Urban Policy Committees. She had also been assigned to the Commerce subcommittee on long term debt and bonding as well as a Judiciary subcommittee reviewing Medicaid fraud whistleblower protection legislation. Ms. Schuitmaker is a past president of the Van Buren County Bar Association, a former vice chairperson of the Michigan State Board of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons, and a former member of the Representative Assembly of the State Bar of Michigan, serving 4 years. A graduate of the Detroit College of Law, she interned at the Cass County prosecutor's office and with Michigan Supreme Court Justice Dorothy Comstock Riley and then began her practice, concentrating in the areas of estate planning and corporate, real estate, municipal, and family law. Licensed to practice in Michigan, Florida, and Illinois, Ms. Schuitmaker is a partner in the law firm of Schuitmaker, Cooper, Schuitmaker, Cypher, & Knotek, PC.
