Derrick Fries is an associate professor in the university’s Department of Special Education. Since 2003 he has served as an expert in child custody cases involving differing school districts. His school district analysis involves a 12-point comparison that allows a quantitative review of what district is the best match for children. Dr. Fries previously served as principal of Avondale Middle School in Auburn Hills, later becoming deputy superintendent of the district (where he held the positions of special education director, community education director, and K-12 curriculum director). He has won many awards during his 31-year K-12 public school career, and was named a NASA Teacher in Space finalist in 1986.
