Thomas F. Sweeney

Thomas F. Sweeney has more than 40 years of experience in estate planning; trust and estate administration; estate, gift, and fiduciary income tax compliance; and trust and estate dispute resolution. He is a former chair of the Probate and Estate Planning Council of the State Bar of Michigan and for six years was an adjunct faculty member at Wayne State University Law School, teaching estate and gift taxation. Mr. Sweeney has made frequent presentations and published numerous articles on both trust and taxation subjects. Following their involvement in a lengthy undue influence case, he and two other lawyers collaborated on a paper about undue influence in estate planning published by Bloomberg BNA in June 2015 as part of its Bloomberg BNA Tax Management Portfolio Series. Its publication led to speaking engagements about undue influence at several events, including the American Bar Association (ABA) 2015 Spring Symposia in Washington, DC; the 2015 Notre Dame Income and Estate Planning Institute; the 2016 Kansas City Estate Planning Symposium; and the Wilmington Trust 2016 New York Trust Symposium. The panel has also made online presentations on undue influence for both ICLE and the ABA. Mr. Sweeney has been recognized by "The Best Lawyers in America" since 2003 and Super Lawyers since 2006.
