John R. Nussbaumer

John R. Nussbaumer teaches in the area of criminal law and procedure. For 30 years he was a professor at Cooley Law School. Before joining the faculty, Mr. Nussbaumer served as a law clerk to former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary S. Coleman and as an assistant public defender for the State Appellate Defender Office (SADO). While at SADO, he successfully argued cases before the Michigan Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Nussbaumer has served as chair on the Michigan Appellate Defender Commission, as the reporter for the Michigan Criminal Jury Instructions Committee, and as reporter for the Sixth Circuit Pattern Federal Criminal Jury Instruction Committee. He is the recipient of the National Bar Association's Presidential Award, the ABA Council of Legal Education Opportunity Legacy Justice award, and the State Bar of Michigan's Champion of Justice Award. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, National Bar Association, Federal Bar Association (of which he is a board member), Oakland County Bar Association, Macomb County Bar Association, Straker Bar Association, Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, Wolverine Bar Association, and Hispanic Bar Association of Michigan. Mr. Nussbaumer has lectured for the Michigan Judicial Institute (MJI) and the Wayne County Criminal Advocacy Program and written for MJI, "Preview of U.S. Supreme Court Cases," and "St. John’s Law Review."
