Hon. Thomas K. Byerley is the chief judge for the trial courts in Eaton County and has been the county's probate judge since being appointed to the bench by Governor Jennifer Granholm in April 2010. He handles cases in the Family Division of the Eaton County Circuit Court as well handling all traditional probate matters. Before taking the bench, Judge Byerley practiced law in Okemos, where he engaged in probate and estate planning and general litigation. Prior to his private practice, he served as regulation counsel at the State Bar of Michigan, where he served as ethics counsel for all lawyers and judges in the state of Michigan. Earlier in his career, Judge Byerley also served as county attorney for Berrien County and as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Cass and Berrien counties. A graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law, he has published a number of legal articles and has taught law courses at the University of Notre Dame and Southwestern Michigan College. He has also been a frequent presenter at continuing legal education seminars, including ICLE and the Michigan Judicial Institute.
