Dale L. Hebert joined the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel for the University of Michigan in 2014. Mr. Hebert’s responsibilities include managing litigation against Michigan Medicine and its staff involving claims of professional negligence. He counsels faculty and leadership on quality improvement protections to promote robust research and educational activities geared toward enhancing quality care and patient safety. Mr. Hebert frequently lectures to Michigan Medicine faculty, trainees, and caregivers on medical-legal topics. He also serves as attorney on call to counsel staff on legal issues that arise in the acute patient care setting. Before joining the Office of General Counsel, he spent more than 30 years as a litigator in private practice defending health care professionals and health systems throughout Michigan against claims of medical malpractice. Mr. Hebert tried dozens of cases as lead counsel before judges and juries in venues throughout the State of Michigan, Ohio and in Federal Court. He has been invited to speak at legal conferences on the topics of professionalism and civility and since 1984 has been recognized by his peers for excellence in his legal expertise, communication skills and ethical standards. Mr. Hebert is recognized as AV by Martindale-Hubbell.
