Judge Mark A. Goldsmith was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan by President Barack Obama on February 4, 2010, and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on June 21, 2010. Prior to his appointment to the federal bench, Judge Goldsmith served as an Oakland County Circuit Judge for over six years and as a part-time magistrate in the 45B District Court for two years. Judge Goldsmith previously practiced law in New York and Detroit-area law firms for nearly 25 years. In addition to his private practice work, Judge Goldsmith served as special counsel to the State Bar of Michigan committee on the unauthorized practice of law; a hearing panelist for the attorney discipline board; and adjunct instructor at Wayne State University Law School. Judge Goldsmith is a past president of the Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and served as that organization’s pro bono chair for many years. He has also served in the leadership of several community organizations. Judge Goldsmith received his undergraduate degree with high distinction and high honors in economics in 1974 from the University of Michigan and his law degree cum laude in 1977 from Harvard Law School.
