Claudia Rast is a shareholder in the firm's Ann Arbor office, where she chairs the Intellectual Property, Cybersecurity and Emerging Technology Group. Her areas of practice focus on domestic and international privacy and data protection, cross-border data transfers, the integrity of critical infrastructure, data breach response, cybersecurity standards, and technology licensing and protection. Ms. Rast's privacy and data protection practice extends over 25 years, during which time she has counseled hundreds of clients on matters of cybersecurity impacting individuals both in the United States and in foreign jurisdictions. Most recently, she represented a client in a "mega" breach response, defined by the Ponemon Institute as a data breach affecting over 1 million individuals. In addition to her legal practice, Ms. Rast is a frequent author on issues of privacy and data security. She is a longtime member of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources and was chair of the section from 2008 to 2009. In August 2020, Ms. Rast received an ABA Presidential Appointment to a three-year term to cochair the ABA's Cybersecurity Legal Task Force, where she has served both as a liaison member and member-at-large since 2013. As part of that task force, she co-authored chapters in the ABA's Cybersecurity Handbook (2d ed 2018 & 3d ed 2022), and was a contributing author to the ABA's Vendor Contracting Cybersecurity Checklist (2d ed 2021).
