Susan Hartmus Hiser is a partner in the firm's Detroit office. She practices in the areas of labor and employment counseling, investigations, and litigation on behalf of a variety of employers. Ms. Hiser has over 30 years of experience counseling employers on various employment matters, such as discrimination and harassment, Family and Medical Leave Act compliance, Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations, and disciplinary issues. She regularly drafts and reviews employment contracts, personnel policies, and employee handbooks and conducts in-house training on all areas of employment law with a particular emphasis on harassment prevention. She is frequently called upon to conduct workplace investigations, both on behalf of her own clients and as an outside investigator, and serves as a Title IX hearing officer. Additionally, Ms. Hiser represents employers in single and multiplaintiff litigation filed in both state and federal courts, as well as in administrative proceedings before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, and the Department of Labor. She is a former council member and officer of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and the Michigan State Bar Foundation, and a member of the American Employment Law Council. Ms. Hiser has been listed in Michigan Super Lawyers, "The Best Lawyers in America" in the areas of labor and employment litigation, and Chambers USA in labor and employment. She has also earned recognition by Benchmark Litigation as a Labor & Employment Star in 2023.
