Hon. Elizabeth A. Stafford was appointed U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan in 2014. Prior to that appointment, she had been an Assistant U.S. Attorney since 2002, where she was assigned to the Public Corruption Unit and previously prosecuted violators of federal drug and gun laws. Before that, Judge Stafford served as an associate at Goodman Eden Millender and Bedrosian and was a career law clerk for U.S. District Judge Victoria A. Roberts. Judge Stafford has handled 20 jury trials, more than a dozen evidentiary hearings, and resolved more than 90 cases by plea. She has taught basic and intermediate trial advocacy at the National Advocacy Center in South Carolina and a federal courts practice course (concerning both civil and criminal practice) at Cooley Law School. Judge Stafford is a co-chairperson of the Diversity Committee for the Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, a steering committee member of the Metropolitan Detroit Pipeline Coordinating Council, and a member of the State Bar of Michigan's Standing Committee on Judicial Qualifications. She has served on the State Bar of Michigan's U.S. Courts Committee and Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee. In 2013, Judge Stafford received the Unsung Hero Award from the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly.
