Thomas L. Kent’s primary responsibilities include representing the university in contract and tort litigation in state and federal courts; providing advice and counsel on labor, employment, law enforcement, and immigration matters; and providing counsel to colleges, schools, departments, and units on the use of Telecommuting Agreements. Mr. Kent also works with the U-M Department of Public Safety and Security on law enforcement matters, investigations, responses to subpoenas and critical Human Resources incidents, and potential or pending litigation; and providing ongoing counsel to Michigan Medicine Human Resources on a variety of non-union staff employment and policy-related matters. He currently serves as chair on the U-M Faculty and Staff Immigration Advisory Counsel. Prior to his arrival at the university, Mr. Kent served as senior assistant city attorney for Ann Arbor for three years and deputy chief legal officer for Flint for five years. From 1996 through 2009, Mr. Kent was in private practice in Ann Arbor, specializing in employment and civil rights litigation. He received his BA in economics from the University of Michigan in 1991 and graduated cum laude from Michigan State University Law School in 1996.
