Hon. Derek Meinecke was elected to the 44th District Court in November 2012 and was appointed chief judge in October 2014. He has since implemented a number of initiatives, including the Justice 101 program, and expanded the Sobriety Court program. Judge Meinecke also began a DWLS (Driving While License Suspended) program to encourage defendants to actively attempt to restore their licenses. Judge Meinecke previously served as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Oakland County, prosecuting the most serious violent offenders and working with the most vulnerable victims as a member of the special victims unit focused on domestic violence, elder abuse, child abuse, and sexual assault. For his work in domestic violence and sexual assault cases, Judge Meinecke was nominated by HAVEN for the Domestic Violence Prevention Award, presented to him by the Oakland County Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence. He has spoken on elder abuse to various community groups across the state and conducted training programs for medical providers, police officers, and assisted living staff members.
