Edward M. Welch, Jr.

Edward M. Welch, Jr., is a professor emeritus of labor and industrial relations at Michigan State University. He was a faculty member there from 1991 to 2008 and established the Workers' Compensation Center, which specializes in the education of worker's compensation professionals. From 1991 to 1999, Mr. Welch also published a newsletter, "On Workers' Compensation." Before that, he served five years as the director of the Michigan Bureau of Workers' Disability Compensation. Mr. Welch practiced law in Battle Creek and Muskegon, Michigan, from 1969 to 1985 and was a high school teacher and counselor before going to law school. During his distinguished career, he published several books and articles, including "Worker's Compensation in Michigan: Law and Practice" (ICLE), which has become the standard legal textbook on worker's compensation in Michigan. Mr. Welch authored the first four editions of this book and coauthored subsequent editions with Daryl C. Royal and Robert J. MacDonald. A cofounder of and early inductee into the Workers' Compensation Hall of Fame, he is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award presented in 2008 by the Workers' Compensation Section of the State Bar of Michigan.
