Richard A. Roane is a partner at the firm and for 35 years has concentrated his practice in domestic relations litigation and alternate dispute resolution, including divorce; child custody; pre- and postnuptial agreements; nonmarital domestic relationships; LGBT family, marriage, and dissolution issues; and complex business valuation and distribution including international family law matters. He is a mediator, an arbitrator certified by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), and a trained collaborative attorney. Mr. Roane is a diplomate in the American College of Family Trial Lawyers, an AAML Michigan chapter fellow (served as president in 2012), and a past delegate to the National Board of Governors. He is currently on the AAML's National Executive Committee serving as a second vice president, is the founding chair of the LGBT/Alternative Family Committee, past cochair of the Hennenhoffer Council, and serves on the AAML's Long Range Planning Committee. Mr. Roane is a past member of the board of directors of the AAML Foundation. He is a member of the American Bar Association's Family Law Section; the State Bar of Michigan's Family Law Section (two-term council member) and LGBTQA Section (2016 founding chair); and the Grand Rapids Bar Association Family Law Section (past chair). Mr. Roane is also a member of the International Academy of Family Lawyers, serving on its LGBT committee. He was named a Top 100 Michigan Super Lawyer in 2010, Best Lawyers Grand Rapids Family Law Attorney of the Year in 2012, and a Leading Lawyer in Family Law from 2013 to 2021 and is rated by Chambers in Family Law for high-net-worth clients. Mr. Roane speaks regularly for ICLE and other organizations, edits a number of ICLE publications, and serves on several ICLE and other bar planning committees. He serves the west Michigan community as a trustee of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, a trustee of First United Methodist Church, and on the board of the Grand Rapids Symphony.
