Scott W. Dales

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Scott W. Dales was appointed as U.S. bankruptcy judge for the Western District of Michigan in October 2007 and was appointed as chief judge in 2013. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals appointed him to the bench in October 2007, on the retirement of Hon. Jo Ann C. Stevenson, and reappointed him at the end of his first term in 2021. Judge Dales was also appointed to the Sixth Circuit's Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for two three-year terms starting in 2018 and to the Information Technology Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States for two three-year terms starting in 2016. He also served as the chief judge of the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel. Initially, Judge Dales worked as a legislative analyst for the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) before attending law school. After graduating from the George Washington University Law School, he served as a law clerk for Hon. Con. G. Cholakis, U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of New York. Following that, he practiced law for several years in Albany, New York, with Barrett, Gravante, Carpinello, and Stern; and in 1998 he moved to Michigan to clerk for Hon. James D. Gregg, of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Michigan. After that clerkship, Judge Dales practiced law with Dykema in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and served as in-house counsel to National City Corporation and its bank and nonbank subsidiaries, assisting those entities primarily with distressed commercial loans, including their aircraft and automotive portfolios, until 2007. He is a member of the New York and Michigan bars.
