Chad D. Engelhardt is a Harvard-trained mediator and experienced trial lawyer and legal educator. For more than two decades, he represented patients and families in medical malpractice, catastrophic injury, and wrongful death matters. He has worked extensively with health systems to investigate the root causes of medical errors and develop solutions that go beyond traditional litigation. Mr. Engelhardt now serves as a mediator, case evaluator, and court-appointed discovery master. Before becoming a lawyer, he served for over 12 years as an officer with a large law enforcement agency. Mr. Engelhardt completed the Mediation Intensive at Harvard Law School's Program on Negotiation and currently chairs the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Washtenaw County Bar Association. In recognition of his trial skills, civility, and professionalism, he received the Respected Advocate Award from the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel (2023). Among the many accolades he has received, Mr. Engelhardt has been named to "The Best Lawyers in America" for medical malpractice law (plaintiffs), named Lawyer of the Year in that category for Ann Arbor, and is a Michigan Super Lawyers Top 100 honoree. Mr. Engelhardt has also received the Respected Advocate Award from the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel in recognition of his trial skill, civility, and professionalism. A leader in the bar, Mr. Engelhardt is a past chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) and is a contributing author and editor of ICLE's Torts: Michigan Law and Practice. He serves on the leadership council of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and is a past chairperson of the Negligence Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan (SBM), a former member of the SBM Representative Assembly, and member of the SBM Special Committee on Professionalism and Civility. Mr. Engelhardt is an adjunct professor of law at Wayne State University Law School, where he teaches courses on Law and Harm and alternative dispute resolution. He is also an adjunct professor at William & Mary Law School, where he developed and teaches a course on policy, patient rights, and equity in healthcare. For over a decade, he taught medical malpractice and litigation skills and supervised clinical externships at Cooley Law School, and he is a repeat guest lecturer in the University of Michigan Law School's trial practice courses. Mr. Engelhardt is a frequent author and continuing legal education speaker on medical negligence, civil litigation, and professionalism. Together with his wife and law partner, Jennifer, he presents medicolegal and patient safety seminars to medical and nursing programs across the country.
