Chris Katopis

Chris Katopis currently serves as the American Bar Association’s intellectual property legislative consultant, bringing a wealth of diverse substantive knowledge and federal government experience to the organization. He is a known leader in the intellectual property and financial services sectors, including serving as the executive director of several key industry trade groups. His career in government includes working as a counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property and Courts, where he helped to enact patent legislation and to conduct agency oversight; serving as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Pauline Newman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; and serving in various key positions at the USPTO. Recently, Mr. Katopis served as a senior legal advisor in the Office of the General Counsel at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, U.S. Department of Commerce, where he worked on a wide range of intellectual property policy, litigation, and administrative matters, including monitoring Federal Circuit briefs and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) opinions. Prior to working at the USPTO, Mr. Katopis was executive director of the Licensing Executives Society International, where he helped an international coalition of IP and tech transfer professionals advance the business of licensing globally.
