Stuart M. Israel’s experience includes litigation in federal and state trial and appellate courts, federal and state agencies, and arbitration forums, in labor, employment, and benefits cases, and general civil actions. He has represented unions and workers in 25 states and Washington DC and has served as a mediator, arbitrator, and fact-finder under the auspices of private and government alternative dispute resolution programs. Before private practice, he taught at the Michigan, Ohio State, Wayne State, and Hawaii law schools, was assistant director and counsel for a national legal services program, and served as an appellate public defender. He is the author of “Taking and Defending Depositions—Second Edition” and coauthor of “Opinions—Essays on Lawyering, Litigation and Arbitration, the Placebo Effect, Chutzpah, and Related Matters” and “Effective Discovery.” His 2004 deposition book was an ALI-ABA best seller. Mr. Israel was elected a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers in 2007 and received the State Bar of Michigan Labor and Employment Law Section’s Distinguished Service Award in 2018. He is a graduate of Michigan State University and the University of Michigan Law School.
