John F. Royal has specialized in the defense of the accused for over 30 years. He began his career with the Wayne County Juvenile Defender Office and then worked at the Defenders Office for Wayne County for eight years, representing indigent persons accused of felonies in both the Detroit Recorder's Court and the Wayne County Circuit Court. During those years, Mr. Royal defended many individuals charged with major crimes, including all degrees of homicide; all degrees of criminal sexual conduct; assault with intent to murder; armed robbery; and kidnapping. In 1988, he opened his own office as a solo practitioner and has continued to specialize in the defense of the accused in both trials and appeals in both state and federal courts. Two of Mr. Royal's major appellate victories are "Harris v Lafler" (6th Cir 2009) and "People v Nyx" (Mich 2007). He has previously lectured on topics relating to criminal defense at seminars sponsored by the Wayne County Criminal Advocacy Program, the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, and ICLE. Mr. Royal serves as president of the Michigan chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and is a member of the Criminal Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan.
