Rudy Serra is an attorney in private practice. A former district judge, he served in the 36th District Court from 2004 to 2007. Before taking the bench, he had 20 years of experience in litigation, as well as experience as a research attorney for the Michigan Court of Appeals. Active in the State Bar of Michigan, Mr. Serra is a member of the Master Lawyers Section and is a former member of the Open Justice Commission. Formerly, he was the founding president of the Stonewall Bar Association, a former member of the Detroit Human Rights Commission, a cochair of the Justice Caucus, chair of the Michigan Executive Clemency Advisory Committee, a referee for the Department of Civil Rights, and a board member of the Triangle Foundation. Mr. Serra was selected as a Michigan Lawyer of the Year in 2000 and received the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Freedom Award in 2001. His writing has been published in the "Wayne Law Review," the "Michigan Bar Journal," the "Journal of Psychology and Christianity," and the journal of the National Association of Human Rights Workers.
